Dear Parents and Students,
What a wonderful day we had in Target! The students completed the promethean Board Activities and did very well! We read out loud The one and Only Ivan and worked our way through the Cognitive Thinking Stations. We also learned lesson 5 for Hands on Equations. The students did a great job presenting their Mostly Mutts Posters and brochures and I was very proud of how so many of them went above and beyond to present this information. Next week, the students will go to different classes and share this information so that we can have a Mostly Mutts drive and help support one of our community organizations. We have been focused on service learning and I could not be happier to see how involved and how much they have learned about this organization and animals in need. Homework: The students will complete HOE lesson 5, complete logic puzzles and a special assignment. They will create something helpful for Mostly Mutts using the straws I sent home with them. You can watch the following video to help you understand their assignment. I put a twist on it by telling them I want something that will help the Mostly Mutts organization. http://pbskids.org/designsquad/
Have a great week, D. Searles

Dear Parents and Students,
What a great day! The students were so excited about voting. We then read outloudThe One & Only Ivan. The students then had silent reading of their novel Sounder for 15 minutes. Next, we moved into our cognitive Thinking Stations before specials. After specials we discussed our Advertising Campaign for Mostly Mutts and the students have a partner to work with on this. Homework: The student and their partner are responsible for a poster & a brochure of some kind advertising the Mostly Mutts foundation. They will present to the class next week and the following week will present it to different classrooms in the building. We will be having a school wide drive for donations to help support the Mostly Mutts foundation beginning Monday, November 28th and ending Friday December 4th. Have a great weekend, D. Searles

Dear Parents and Students,
What an awesome day we had at the field trip! It was amazing as we toured the facility and were able to play with the sweet dogs they had there. I was so impressed with my students' behavior. I know that they would love to go back there with their parents and visit. Thank you so much for all of you who donated to the Mostly Mutts organization. They greatly appreciated all the paper towels, cleaning supplies, gift cards as well monetary donations. Homework: Logic Puzzle.
Have a great week, D. Searles

Dear Parents and Students,
What a great day we had today! Even though our day was shortened, we accomplished quite a bit. We started the day with our challenges from the bulletin board and then moved into our promethean board warm ups. They did a great job on the medium jigsaw puzzle and only missed our 10 minute goal by 59 seconds! Next, we worked with partners in our cognitive thinking stations. After specials, we picked up our lunch and went outside and sat by the pond to eat. I was able to do our read out loud while the students ate. We ended the day with our students working on a STEM activity. They learned about what makes an airplane fly? The students worked with a partner and made a paper airplane which we took into the hallway and tried flying. We then came back to class and watched a short video about paper planes. Each student made their own paper airplane and tried to see how far it could fly when we took them outside. The students were able to see who had the plane that flew the farthest and what the difference was between what they build and what their peers built. It was a great way to end our day! Homework: Complete logic puzzles and make a paper airplane to bring into class next week. Have a great week, D. Searles

Dear Parents and Students,
We had another great day in Target today! First, we arrived to find out that Mrs. Searles has new items on the wall to choose challenging activities. Next, we went to the computer lab and worked on our research of silver back gorillas. We then came back to class and I read to them from The One and Only Ivan. The students were then able to have 15 minutes of silent reading--Sounder. Next, we selected partners and worked in our Cognitive Thinking Stations. We ended the day with Hands on Equations. Homework: Logic Puzzles, and complete research of the silver back gorilla. Have a great week, D. Searles

Dear Parents and Students,
We had an awesome day back together today. We began the day in our usual way by warming up with the promethean board activities. Next, we worked our way through Cognitive Thinking Stations. The surprise of the day was that we had a visitor from Mostly Mutts who came and spoke to us about what the responsibility of the shelter is and how they bring in animals to care for. The best part, however, was they brought a dog who had been paralyzed by being treated badly from its previous owner. He was the sweetest pup and the children were able to see that he was able to adapt and get around just fine. This was the highlight of the day I believe! After lunch and specials we read more from our novel The One and Only Ivan. We were also able to finish up our Cognitive Thinking. Homework: Complete both sides of the logic puzzle. Also, if you have not turned in your permission slip or monies for the field trip, please do so ASAP! Have a great week, D. Searles

Dear Parents and Students,
Today the students arrived late due to the Iowa Testing. We only really had our afternoon together and unfortunately were not able to complete all the things we had planned. We did have our read out loud The One and Only Ivan and they love this novel! We also were able to work in our Cognitive Thinking Stations which are always such a great way to be able to get our brains fired up while playing games. The students are very excited about their field trip in October and I can't wait for them to learn more about this organization. We have no homework because we will all be enjoying Fall Break! Have a safe and fun filled week, D. Searles

Dear Parents and Students,
It was a whirlwind of a day today! The students had to take their Cogat test this morning so we started a little later than normal. We worked on our promethean board warm ups as we waited for one another to arrive and then we had our Read Out Loud The One and Only Ivan. The students are really enjoying this novel. Next, we worked on our Affective Lesson from last week and finished up "Virtue Characteristics"--Transcendence, Wisdom and Knowledge, Temperance, Humanity, Courage, and Justice. After lunch, we went to the laptop lab and worked on our Mostly Mutts Research. We wrapped up the day with a Yamodo-creative thinking involving our F2OE. Busy, but great day! Homework: Complete research of Mostly Mutts, Complete drawings for VIA Characteristics, and complete logic puzzles. Have a great week, D. Searles

Dear Students and Parents,
Super day today and lots has been accomplished! We warmed up with the Promethean Board activities and then moved right into our Affective Lesson for the day which was about our VIA Character words. We read a book about a young girl and her mom preparing for a family dinner and the little girl took something of her mothers. We related the story to the virtue characteristics of Transcendence,
Wisdom and Knowledge, Temperance, Humanity,Courage and Justice. Then we moved into our Cognitive Thinking Stations and used the Ipad to practice our Hands on Equations. Next we had a few minutes of independent reading of Sounder. After lunch we had our Read Aloud The One and Only Ivan and then we went to the computer lab to Research information about the Mostly Mutts Center. All in all a very successful day! Homework: Complete the pictures on our VIA--Virtue Characteristics as well as our Logic Puzzle! Have a great week, D. Searles
